Visakhapatnam: With the absence of strong political lobbying at the Centre, the public sector units in Visakhapatnam have not received even a single rupee from the Central government for Hudhud devastation.

  • District administration prepared a report about the loss of assets, including losses of PSUs
  • All the industries are badly hit by the cyclone
  • The district administration in its assessment, put the losses at Rs 1,369.43 crore in the 19 industrial houses located in Visakhapatnam city.
  • The Hindustan Shipyard Limited listed in the top with Rs 500 crore losses.

Soon after the destruction, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived on October 14, 2014 in the city and assured the people that the Centre would extend financial assistance to Visakhapatnam, including to all the major industries. He announced a financial package of Rs 1,000 crore to take up immediate steps.

However, even after three years, the PSUs in the city have not received even a single rupee. In fact, the district administration had prepared a report about the loss of assets, including losses of PSUs. All the industries were badly hit by the cyclone.

The district administration in its assessment, put the losses at Rs 1,369.43 crore in the 19 industrial houses located in Visakhapatnam city. The Hindustan Shipyard Limited listed in the top with Rs 500 crore losses.

All the industries have sent their reports about the loss of property and machinery affected to their ministries concerned. The state government had also sent its report to the Centre seeking financial help on a large scale. However, after a series of developments, the Central government deployed special teams to assess the losses.

However, contradicting the state government’s tall claims of Hudhud losses, the central teams reported to Centre that the losses wer not heavy. “The Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and Hindustan Shipyard Limited incurred huge losses. The other industries like HPCL and Visakhapatnam Port also suffered huge losses amounting to hundreds of crores.

The Centre had assured to provide compensation on account of Hudhud cyclone. Even after completion of three years, the Central government has not released even a single rupee. At least, the Centre should assist the PSUs by compensating the property losses,” the Vice-president of CITU, Andhra Pradesh, Ch Narasinga Rao, demanded while speaking to The Hans India here on Friday.

According to highly placed sources, the Central teams informed the government that PSUs and other government enterprises would get insurance claims about their property and machinery losses.
