Eluru: Film actor Suman called upon the players to practise karate to secure medals as the Olympics Committee will introduce the game in next Olympics.

He inaugurated a two-day Japan Shotokan Karate-Du Kaninjuku National Open Badeti Challenge Cup-2017 here on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, he said 2020 Olympics will be conducted in Tokyo and the players from South India should get the medals in karate.

He suggested to the trainers to impart training in karate among the enthusiastic youth and children. He said that coaches like Tyagarajan and others are trying to unearth the hidden talent among the youth in karate. He said that karate will increase the self-confidence and it will be useful for self-defence. He urged the State and Central governments to assist the karate players in all aspects to get the Olympic medals.

Eluru MLA and Karate Association president Badeti Kota Rama Rao (Bujji) said that the karate championship will be conducted for two days in the city and 750 kplayers from 11 states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Goa are participating in the competitions.

Karate Association of India Referee Committee chairman Paranjyothi Singh said that the government should set up a special indoor stadium for the martial arts like karate. He suggested to the MLA to take initiative to set up a stadium for this purpose. He pointed out that Madhya Pradesh is in number one place in martial arts. Earlier, Suman, Eluru MLA Badeti Kota Rama Rao, Municipal Corporation Co-option member SMR Pedababu inaugurated the championship. BJP city president Nagam Siva, Ibrahim Baig, DL Narayana, Hanmantha Rao and others participated in the programme.
