Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam Shipping Harbour will soon become numero uno in the country, said HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao who laid the foundation stone for the construction of modern hygienic fish market at cost of Rs 2.75 crore at fishing harbour here on Saturday. At the same time, the HRD Minister also inaugurated the dry fish cold storage godown built at a cost of Rs 62.50 lakhs.

Speaking on the occasion, he said the Minister of Fisheries will soon visit Visakhapatnam district and convene a meeting with the District Collector, local MLA, port chairman and fishing folk associations to sort out the issues being faced by the fishing community.

“As there is a need to maintain cleanliness at the harbour, GVMC and Port Trust should work in tandem to achieve it,” he said.

Later, MLA Vasupalli Ganesh Kumar said that they have been conducting grievance meets every Tuesday.

“There are many issues of fishing community which needs to be addressed at the earliest. The subsidy of Rs 6 being provided to fishermen for fuel has to be hiked,” he said.

He urged HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao to look into the matter of allotting pensions to above 50 years fishing community under NTR Bharosa scheme.

Collector Pravin Kumar said steps would be taken to finish the construction of modern market facility within nine months. The Collector asked all the fishing community to get registered for Chandranna Bheema scheme as it would be helpful to get insurance when mishaps occur.

Zilla Parishad Chairperson Lalam Bhavani, Port Chairman MT Krishna Babu, Assistant Director of Fisheries Dr Shankar Rao, AD Lakshmi Narayana, representatives of fishery associations, EE Umesh Kumar and others attended.
