Vizianagaram: Like mangoes, water melons, another seasonal fruit custard apple arrived in the market from agency areas. Actually, custard apples are not being grown by farmers in this area and most of the fruits are being brought by the tribals from the hilly areas to the nearest weekly markets and towns.

Each basket of custard apples is being sold at Rs 30 to Rs 40 and two big baskets are sold at Rs 100. Availability of custard apples is high in Salur, Makkuva, Kurupam, S Kota, Komarada, and some other agency mandals and the tribals collect them from the hills and bring them to the nearby towns and villages.

But the tourists of West Bengal, Odisha, who come to Vizag via Vizianagaram, are purchasing them in huge quantities. Some of the traders are coming with vans and purchasing from the local markets and small towns and exporting them to other states. Hence, the cost of the fruits is raised abnormally.

K Satish, a student said: “I used to buy each fruit at one rupee in my village for the past few years. But now I need to pay Rs 10 per fruit. Anyhow, I like these fruits, therefore, I am purchasing by paying Rs 50 per kg.”
