Visakhapatnam: “Unfortunately, all the governments have exchanged self-reliance for globalisation, which will not serve the purpose of India. It is time to get back to self-reliance, which is non-negotiable," said V Siddhartha, a retired scientist of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
He was speaking at a seminar on – ‘Indira Gandhi's commitment and contribution to our nation progress in science and technology’ - organised as part of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's birth centenary celebrations in the city by Congress party on Sunday.
Recalling the services rendered by the former Prime Minister, eminent scientist V Siddhartha said that Indira Gandhi had played a pivotal role in laying a strong path for development of science and technology in the country and was instrumental in putting forward the idea of developing a Nuclear Submarine after 1971 war.
“The credit goes to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for taking initiative in setting up indigenously designed radar technology for getting alerts about cyclones beforehand,” he said.
Later, Dr A Prasanna Kumar, Director for Centre for Policy Studies, Vishakhapatnam, pointed out that Indira Gandhi spoke about science and technology convergence in 1963 itself at Andhra University convocation.
Vijay Lakshmi Gupta, former member of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), said Indira Gandhi had a good connect with the people.
Prof KS Chalam, former UPSC member, underscored that Indira Gandhi took the initiative in incorporating the clause relating to scientific temper and humanism in Article 51A in the 42nd Amendment as well as addition of two words – secularism and socialism – in the Constitution. Rajya Sabha MP T Subbarami Reddy, former Union Minister MM Pallam Raju, PCC General Secretary Dronamraju Srinivas, former MP Killi Krupa Rani, City Congress President Behara Bhaskara Rao, Congress leaders and others were present on the occasion.
