Seven police staffers suspended for betting
Seven police personnel attached to Narsaraopeta sub-division in the district, including two Sub-Inspectors, were suspended on the charges of involvement in cricket betting. Guntur Range DIG of police K V V Gopala Rao on Sunday issued orders effecting suspension of the tainted personnel.Â

The suspended officers included two sub-inspectors G Aspan, G Edukondalu, ASI Ch Srinivasarao, two constables Vasantha Rao, Balaji Nayak and two home guards Y Venkateswara Reddy and Sk.Saida. A probe conducted by special investigation teams constituted by the Guntur district rural SP Appala Naidu reportedly exposed their nexus with the betting organisers. The accused were said to have been actively involved in betting also, it is alleged.
Suicide of a couple, victims of betting, was reported in Guntur city a few days ago. The investigation teams chanced upon the clues establishing the guilt of the police personnel while pursuing the suicide case, sources in the police department said.
A call record recovered from a bookie by the teams revealed several calls made by the accused police personnel. The SP launched a drive against cricket betting in the last one month in the wake of complaints that the game was financially ruing several families.
