Vijayawada: There was mixed response for junior colleges bandh in Vijayawada on Monday. The Joint Action Committee of students’ associations gave bandh call to mount pressure on the State government to prevent suicides of students and take stern action against college managements responsible for suicides. The students’ association leaders went to various junior colleges and enforced the bandh in Vijayawada.

Later, they staged a dharna at NRI College at Benz Circle raising slogans against college managements. PDSU state president A Ravi Chandu, SFI state vice-president M Mahesh and YSRCP students cell city president Anji Reddy participated in the protest.

Speaking on the occasion, A Ravi Chandu said Narayana Groups colleges turned as a death trap and alleged that corporate colleges are mounting pressure on students to get more marks and ranks.

Despite dozens of students committed suicides in the corporate junior colleges, he criticised the ministers P Narayana and Ganta Srinivas Rao for not responding on the issue.

He demanded Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to remove Narayana and Ganta Srinivasa Rao from the State Cabinet immediately. He demanded implementation of Chakrapani Committee and Prof Nirada Reddy committee recommendations immediately to stop students’ suicides.

SFI state vice-president M Mahesh said though corporate colleges are conducting classes on Sunday and holidays but Intermediate Board officials are not taking any action against them. He questioned as to why Intermediate Board officials did not take any action against them.

He demanded the government to end classes by 4 pm every day and abolish EAMCET. He urged the government to introduce grading system in the intermediate. He also demanded the government introduce counseling centres in the junior colleges immediately.

Though minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao announced Sri Chaitanya and Narayana colleges hostels have no permission, he asked as to why the government did not take any action against them. AISF city secretary C Sai Charan, SFI city secretary Ch Samanth, PDSU leader Rajesh and YSRCP leader Anji Reddy were present.
