Vijayawada: South Zone Inter-University Handball Tournament for Men began at Vikas Educational Institutions at Nunna near Vijayawada on a grand manner on Saturday.

In all, 50 university teams from various parts of South India attended the inaugural function. Players participated in the march past. The sporting event will be concluded on October 25.

Krishna Zilla Parishad Chairperson Gadde Anuradha, Krishna-Guntur districts teachers constituency MLC Dr AS Ramakrishna inaugurated the tourney hosted by Krishna University and Vikas College of Physical Education (BPED) at Vikas Educational Institutions.

Speaking on the occasion, Zilla Parishad Chairperson Gadde Anuradha said sports and games are very useful to the students to reduce the stress and underlined the need to promote sports and games by all educational institutions.

She felt the educational institutions should not exert pressure and burden on the students in the name of ranks or seats. She further said that sports policy announced by the government would be very useful to the players. MLC Dr AS Ramakrishna said that the state government is encouraging sports and games in all educational institutions and allocating more budget.

Krishna University Vice-chancellor Prof S Ramakrishna Rao, Nunna sarpanch Karre Vijay Kumar, University Sports Board secretary Dr N Srinivas, ANU Physical Education College principal Dr PPS Paul Kumar, Krishna University College principal Sundar Krishna, Vikas Educational Institutions chairman Naredla Narsi Reddy, secretary N Satyanarayana Reddy, BPED College principal Dr S Raju, AP Handball Association secretary N Venkateswara Rao and others participated.

In the first match Kakatiya University of Telangana State defeated Davangere University (Karnataka) in pool A by 37-15 goals. In another match, Osmania University (TS) beat Manipal University (KA) by 37-8 goals. K L University of AP defeated SV Institute of Medical Sciences (AP) by 28-5 goals. In another match JNTU (Kakinada) lost to Kuvempu University by 23-25 goals, Yogi Vemana University (AP) lost to Madurai Kamaraj University (TN) by 18-43 goals.
