Visakhapatnam: Rich tributes were paid to the police personnel, who made supreme sacrifices while performing their duty, to mark the Martyrs’ Day at the RK Beach here on Saturday. District Collector Pravin Kumar was the chief guest.

Addressing a huge gathering, Pravin Kumar said in order to protect the country’s sovereignty and save lives of people, these police personnel staying away from their families sacrificed their lives.

This year 343 police personnel were killed while performing their duties across the country, he said.

“I also appreciate the police personnel, who are working round- -the-clock to maintain law and order and peace in the society,’’ he added. The Collector also appreciated the work of the city police for protecting foreign delegates visiting the city for various international meetings like Partnership Summit and International Fleet Review . The government will compensate the loss and provide employment to their children, he said.

Explaining about the importance of the day, Commissioner of Police T Yoganand said Chinese forces intruded into the Indian soil and killed 12 CRPF personnel in Ladakh region on October 21, 1959. Since then, every year on this day, the Martyrs’ Day is being observed.

He said several events were organised from October 15 to 21 and winners of the competition were given awards. The police explained their duties and exhibited weapons to the students and the general public.

An impressive parade was organised to mark the event and all those present observed two minutes silence as a mark of respect to the martyrs.

Local MP Dr K Haribabu, MLA P Vishnu Kumar Raju and senior officials were present on the occasion.

In another event, Superintendent of Police Rahul Dev Sharma and other official met the families of the martyrs and presented a cheque for Rs 10,000 to each.
