Visakhapatnam: Beginning March next year, all the corporate hospitals and nursing homes would have to shift to Health City located near Hanumanthawaka adjoining the National Highway. In fact, a GO would be issued to ban hospitals in the city and confine them to Health City only.

  • In the first phase, the hospitals in around the Collectorate junction and King George Hospital will be closed and moved to Health City
  • The distance from KGH to Health City is 10 km
  • This is being done for two reasons-to fill the space in APIIC Health City and to ease the ever-increasing traffic near the Collectorate and KGH junctions.

In the first phase, the hospitals in around the Collectorate junction and King George Hospital would be closed and moved to Health City and the process will continue till most of the hospitals are shifted. The distance from KGH to Health City is around 10 km.

This is being done for two reasons-to fill the space in APIIC Health City and to ease the ever-increasing traffic near the Collectorate and KGH junctions. The government proposed Health City as part of Smart City to promote medical tourism and to attract investment from the NRIs in the healthcare sector.

The APIIC developed 32 plots in an area of 66 acres and of them 24 hospitals were allocated space and eight are vacant. Six corporate hospitals, including Apollo, Pinnacle, Q1 began their operations, said zonal manager of APIIC C Yethiraju.

Talking to this correspondent here on Tuesday, he said 15 hospitals are under construction and three more would begin construction soon. LV Prasad Eye Hospital was constructed long ago and recently the government owned Visakhapatnam Institute of Medical Sciences was functioning.

Located close to Musarlova Reservoir and having 80 feet road leading to Simhachalam from National Highway, the Health City is situated in a picturesque site and free from city pollution.

“Health City is also close to people living in Madhurawada, Anandapuram and Bhimili and for the patients coming from Odisha and Chhattisgarh it would be most ideal and convenient. The city will soon have hotels, restaurants and laundry facilities and the attendants need not look for alternative accommodation,’’ the zonal manager said. Several nursing home owners said it would be convenient for them if the land cost from the present rates were slashed.

“The present location close to King George Hospital is convenient for the patients as many who fail to get better treatment at KGH immediately can approach a private hospital for a second opinion,’’ Dr Ravi Kumar, a neurologist said.

The traffic police are happy over the move as they had to battle with the frequent agitations that take place in front of the Collectorate while making way for the ambulances.

“Traffic flow will be eased by more than 50 per cent. Other than important junctions, we mostly focus near King George Hospital where more hospitals are located,’’ said deputy commissioner of police K Mahendra Patrudu.
