Nellore: CPI (M) district secretary Chandra Raja Gopal demanded the district administration to immediately conduct Irrigation Advisory Board (IAB) meeting to release water for delta and non-delta areas.

  • CPM district secretary Chandra Raja Gopal demands release of 30 tmc ft water from Krishna river via Pothireddypadu head regulator for needs of Tamil Nadu
  • Says the district has not received any water from Krishna river for last two years
  • Asks Irrigation authorities to take up repair works across the canal before the season for preventing pilferages

He also demanded the government release 15 tmc ft of water from Krishna river via Pothireddypadu head regulator for discharging to Tamil Nadu state as part of the bilateral agreement.

Interacting with the media at the party office here on Wednesday, Raja Gopal said that Somasila reservoir had received adequate water from the upper catchment areas of river Penna due to sufficient rains.

He also said the district had not received any water from Krishna river for last two years. The CPM leader also demanded to release 30 tmc ft water from Krishna river via Pothireddypadu head regulator for needs of Tamil Nadu. He explained that the water storage level in Somasila is 49.329 tmc ft and the water level in Kandaleru is 10 tmc.

“District would also receive rainfall during November and December and Somasila reservoir would get another 30 to 40 tmc ft water. Keeping in view of this, authorities must release water from Somasila reservoir,” suggested CPM district secretary.

The capacity of Somasila Swarnamukhi Flood Flow Canal (SSFC) is only 12,000 cusecs and only 1 tmc ft water would reach Kandaleru. Officials must release water for Tamil Nadu immediately when flows are satisfactory rather than releasing during peak time and scarce, he added.

The CPM leader asked the irrigation authorities to take up repair works across the canal before the season for preventing pilferages. Farmers have been facing difficulties due to canal repair works that were being taken up during peak season, he added.

Raja Gopal said that Agriculture Minister Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy should intervene in the issue immediately for conducting IAB meet for taking a decision on release of water from the Somasila reservoir. AP Rythu Sangham district secretary J Venkama Raju, AP Koulu Rythu Sangham leader P Chandramouli were also present.
