- Exporters say e-Nam and GST have dampened the exports
- Guntur district alone contributes to half of total chilli exports from India
Market experts say it will be good news for the exporters who have been facing severe heat after introduction of e-NAM (electronic National Agricultural Market) and GST (Goods and Services Tax).
Kilari Rosaiah, former director of Spices Board, explained that the chilli plays a key role in export of spices from India every year. Due to introduction of e-NAM system at market yards and enforcement of GST, exporters have been facing many problems, he added.
He said that under the e-NAM system, the buyer has to pay money to the farmers immediately through online. This mandatory provision of instant payment to the farmers has been adversely impacting the sales at the market.
Till now, under the traditional purchase system, buyers generally enjoyed flexibility in payments to the farmers, but now this delayed payment option is not available. Adding to that, the GST also affected the business this year, Rosaiah said.
In these circumstances, if anybody comes forward to provide financial support, it would be of a great help to the exporters, he said. Rosaiah further observed that apart from that, the government has to release the incentives on time, which would ease the burden on the exporting companies.
Guntur Mirchi Yard chairman Mannava Saubba Rao said out of the total chilli exports from India, 50 per cent come from Guntur district alone. He said that the chilli was being exported to more than dozen countries from Guntur every year. Still there is a potential for the exports from the state, he added.
Subba Rao stated that the Chief Minister’s initiative would help in promoting the exports to a maximum potential level. It is estimated that the export of chilli is more than four lakh tonnes during the financial year 2016-17 as against 3.47 lakh tonnes in 2015-16, according to the Spices Board’s latest reports on Exports Performance of spices. On the other hand, YSRCP MLA Md. Mustafa opined that unless the proposal come to a logical end, we could not predict imaginary results.
