Vijayawada: The Heart & Brain Institute, Andhra Hospitals (AH), organised a paediatric cardiology & cardiac surgical camp, in association with Healing Little Hearts, the UK, from October 23 to 27. A nine-member team led by Dr Vikram Kudumula, the UK doctors from world famous Alderhey Children’s Hospital, Liverpool, Glenfield Hospital, Leicester, Great Ormond Street Hospital, London, Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital, Australia, performed 15 free heart surgeries during this period.

The team included an interventional cardiologist, surgeons, intensivists, anesthetist, perfusionist and intensive care nurses. They performed complex heart surgeries. A total of 203 child heart surgeries have performed successfully so far by the UK team and AH team during the past 22 months.

Addressing the media here on Friday, Dr PV Ramana Murthy, Managing Director, Andhra Hospitals, said that they have been doing children heart surgeries regularly during the last two years. Healing little hearts, the UK team, had come nine times during the past 22 months. ‘AH plans to do more surgeries if we get support from Andhra Pradesh government’.

Dr PV Rama Rao, chief, children’s services, said the success rate of AH was on par with international standards. This has been achieved because of the UK team and also support from AH cardiac team and tertiary paediatric Intensive care services.
