Visakhapatnam: Andhra Pradesh Women's Commission Chairperson Nannapaneni Rajakumari said here on Friday that public should be more sensitive and they should react to atrocities being committed against women.

Referring to the recent broad daylight rape of a 40-year-old destitute woman on a pavement at Railway New Colony by one Ganji Shiva (21), she said the incident happened in full public glare and none rescued the woman.

She also found fault with the auto driver who filmed the crime and later transmitted it to the police helpline WhatsApp. He should have rescued her before filming the incident. She endorsed the arrest of the driver.

“If the auto driver had filmed and transmitted that to the police only as an evidence it was acceptable. He should not have leaked it out to the media and his friends. That is crime,” she pointed out.

On the compensation to the victim and punishment to the accused, she said that the victim right now wanted privacy and requested a meeting later. “As far punishment is concerned we have asked the police to book a very strong case,” she said.

She also called the police personnel during the press briefing. Rajkumari also faulted the telecast of serials and cinemas showing women in bad light and free flow of pornography on the internet. “We are working on how to stop internet pornography, as these are polluting the minds of youth,” she said.

The Women's Commission Chairperson also said that efforts are on to start ‘She Teams’, on the lines of Telangana police model. “ I will hand over a proposal to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu soon,” she said.

On the plight of tribal women and increasing rate of maternal deaths and infant mortality in the agency, she said she will proposed to the government to appoint a gynaecologist and make mandatory to spend one year in the agency. They would be provided a good accommodation so that they would stay there and work, she said.
