 YSRCP Councillor Inturi Rajagopal has been unanimously elected the chairman of the Jaggaiahpet Municipality on Saturday.

Vijayawada: YSRCP Councillor Inturi Rajagopal has been unanimously elected the chairman of the Jaggaiahpet Municipality on Saturday.

The YSRCP has absolute majority with 16 councillors in the 27- member municipal council. The Telugu Desam Party which has 11 members boycotted the election.

Vijayawada MP Kesineni Srinivas alias Nani and Jaggaiahpet MLA Sriram Tataiah allegedly tried to halt the elections on Saturday and exerted pressure on the officials to stop the election alleging that the Rajagopal had kidnapped two TDP Councillors.

But the election officer and sub-collector Harish categorically made it clear they will go ahead with polling. The YSRCP councillors entered the council hall and elected new chairman immediately. The election was conducted as part of the agreement reached by YSRCP leaders for change of chairman. Earlier, Tanneeru Nageswara Rao held the post three years. Now, Rajagopal has been elected for a two-year term as part of the agreement.

YSRCP senior leader and former MLA Samineni Udaya Bhanu, district party president Kolusu Parthasarathi and other leaders hailed the victory. They spoke to the media persons and claimed that election was clear victory for democracy.

Earlier, the TDP leaders created many hurdles to stop the elections. But the officials decided to convene a meeting on Saturday to elect new chairman of the municipality. Security tightened near the municipal office in Jaggaiahpet since Friday to prevent any untoward incident. After the defeat in the Assembly elections, the YSRCP got some relief with Saturday’s election in Jaggaiahpet.
