Eluru: CPI State secretary K Ramakrishna said that the party will take up national level agitation demanding that the Central and State governments should complete the construction of Polavaram Irrigation Project and solve the displaced people’s problems.

Addressing a media conference at Sphurti Bhavan (CPI district office) here, Ramakrishna said that the CPI is agitating for the speedy construction of the Polavaram multi-purpose irrigation project right from the beginning in the State.

He said that the CPI is demanding that the government should speed up the project construction and solve the problems of the displaced people as a top priority.

Ramakrishna said that already CPI MP D Raja and CPM MP Sampat raised the project construction issue in Parliament. He pointed out that about Rs 16,000 crore is required for the Project construction and Rs 33,000 crore for the relief and rehabilitation of the displaced people.

He wondered how the project will be completed if the Centre failed to release funds for its construction. He pointed out that thousands of displaced people in Veleairpadu and Kukkunuru mandals were migrating to Hyderabad Rajahmundry and other cities for their livelihood.

He alleged that the officials have declared those migrated people as ineligible for the compensation and rehabilitation programmes. He also alleged that the government has appointed inefficient and corrupt officials to look after the Relief and Rehabilitation programmes and with this, those officials are neglecting the displaced people who sacrificed their lands for the project.

Likewise, in Vamsadhara Project, several villages have been evacuated in the name of inundation. He said that about 10,000 families live in the affected villages of Vamsadhara Project and the government has constructed only 1,555 houses.
