Visakhapatnam: Following Intelligence Bureau (IB)’s dossier that there could be threat from the outlawed Maoists, para military outfit Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will take over the security of Polavaram National Irrigation Project soon. Both NDA and TDP governments have decided to complete the project by 2019.

The TDP government has been gearing up the all the construction works and handed over the security duties to the State police. Sensing the Maoists threat to the project, good number of men were deployed to guard the project. At present, 80 personnel from Kakinada Third Battalion and 40 from Anti-Naxal Squad are guarding the project.

With the instructions of the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu large number of CC Cameras were set up for close monitoring of the security arrangements. The government has already arranged two drones to keep vigil on the project works and to monitor the security also. The government also set up a special sub divisional police office covering five mandals - Polavaram, Jeelugumilli, Buttaigudem, Kukunuru and Velerupadu.

In the last two years, the works have been geared up and private companies deployed latest machinery at the location. Meanwhile, State government has facing several challenges for the settlement of oustees of the project. In the back drop, the IB alerted the both Centre and State government stressing the need to strengthen the security to Polavaram project.

In view of the disputes with the tribals, non tribals, R and R package issues, the government also came to a conclusion that there is a need to strengthen the security. As the total cost of the project is funded by the Centre, National status has been accorded to the project and the Centre also decided to hand over the security duties to the CISF.

“We do not have official information that the security of the project handing over to the CISF. But, there is information that the Centre is trying to handover the security of the project to the CISF. It is a welcome decision. Once the security issues handed over to the CISF, the regular police will have time to handle the law and order issues. Already there are several issues related to the R and R ” DSP, Polavaram APV Ravikumar told The Hans India.
