Vijayawada: Home Minister N Chinarajappa said photographs keep sweet memories alive and photographers working in the media boldly perform their duties. He said the photographers play a key role in furnishing information to the people with their live pictures and coverage.

Chinarajappa, along with Finance Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu and Agriculture Minister Somireddy Chandramohana Reddy, presented photography awards to the photographers working in the media at the India Press Photo Awards organised at the Cultural Centre of Vijayawada and Amaravati on Wednesday.

The lensmen of The Hans India, Vijayawada, Ch Venkata Mastan and Y Vinay Kumar bagged awards; the former bagged award in the spot news category, while the latter received special achievement award. The organisers congratulated the award winners.

Andhra Pradesh Srujanatmakata and Samskruti, State Photo Journalists Association and The Cultural Centre of Vijayawada and Amaravati jointly conducted the birth anniversary of Oskar Barnack, who invented the camera, and presented the India Press Photo awards. Photographers across the world celebrate the birth anniversary of Oskar Barnack, inventor of Leica proto type camera 100 years ago, on November 1 every year.

Addressing a gathering, Finance Minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu complimented the photographers for their contribution to the media. He said photography is very powerful. Agriculture Minister Somireddy Chandramohan Reddy said with the advent of social media photos can be sent from one area to other area in the world within minutes. He regretted that many youth are losing lives while trying to take selfies.

Narasapuram MP Gokaraju Gangaraju, Andhra Pradesh Press Academy chairman V Vasudeva Deekshitulu, Andhra Pradesh Photography Academy General Secretary and Photo Contest Chairman T Srinvasa Reddy and others spoke on the occasion.

In all, 193 photographers have sent for the India Press Photo Contest -2017. Awards were presented to 83 photographers in different contests on the occasion. Photo journalist P Raja Rao and PV Siva Kumar received lifetime achievement awards for their contribution to the photography.

Association president Ch Vijay Bhaskar, General secretary Y D Anand, CVAV CEO E Sivanagi Reddy, Vijayawada East MLA Gadde Rammohan and others attended the event. The Ministers presented awards. A photo exhibition was organised on the occasion.
