Visakhapatnam: A public hearing on the EIA for improving the capacity utilisation of Oil Refinery 1 and 2 berths has been called for by Visakhapatnam Port Trust on Tuesday. A large number of people, including the stevedoring agents and PPP operators, were present.

Briefly explaining the project, VPT Chairman MT Krishna Babu informed that the proposal of capacity improvement of OR-1 and OR-2 berths and stated that the berths were constructed in 1957 and the available draft is 10.5 metres and the berths have out-lived their life span.

The Chairman said that the existing berths needed to be demolished and reconstructed duly facilitating the berths with a dredge depth of 16.10 metres and to extend the berth totalling to 606 metres in length and it is time for improving the facility for better utilisation and for economic growth of Visakhapatnam Port.

He said that the facility was expected to cost Rs 193.30 crore and by improving the capacity, the output was expected at 9.81 MT per annum from the existing 3.28 MT which would boost the economy of the port.
