Vijayawada: Traffic curbs being implemented by the police for commuters between Durga temple and Punnami Ghat for speedy construction of Durga temple flyover construction works has spoiled the festive spirit of denizens who wish to visit the Bhavani Island for recreation during the Karthika maasam which began on October 20.

Karhika masam is well known for garden parties with family members, friends, relatives and colleagues. Ten days passed since the beginning of Karthika masam, festive spirit is yet to pick up in the picturesque Bhavani island.

One of the prime reasons for lukewarm response from denizens is lack of direct road connectivity to Punnami Ghat from the city i.e; Eluru Road or MG Road and Krishna Lanka. The denizens should go to Punnami Ghat via Chitti Nagar tunnel where vehicles pass on very narrow roads of in the Old City. These roads are not only narrow but also turned very dangerous to the commuters due to passing of heavy vehicles.

Police imposed a ban on plying vehicles between Durga temple and Kummaripalem and Punnami Ghat nearly two months ago for speedy construction of flyover.

The Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) has announced packages and made special arrangements for the fun and frolic of denizens during Karthika masam at the Bhavani Island. Boat riding is a special joy for the visitors.

The APTDC is offering lunch and boating for the visitors. But there is a poor response from the public for Karthika masam package, which include boating and lunch with Rs 250 and Rs 350 per each person, commented an official supervising the arrangements in the Bhavani Island.

He said last year more than 1.50 lakh people visited the Bhavani Isand during the Karthika masam. This year, the attendance is very low, he added. The APTDC operates three boats each capacity of 60 seats, one big boat Bodhisiri with 120 seating capacity, one speed boat for four persons, Jetty for one person and Pontoon boat for 25 persons.

S Murali, a marketing manager of a private company and resident of Machavaram, said the family is not willing to visit the Bhavani Island this season due to closure of road from Durga temple to Punnami Ghat. He said it is difficult to travel on the narrow roads in the old city to visit Punnami Ghat where boating facility available to reach the Bhavani Island. He said it is better to visit any garden near Nunna or Agiripalli instead of going to the Bhavani Island.

The APTDC has made elaborate arrangements for recreation with adventure sports and other games. Spider web, trampoline, zip line, wine traverse are some of the attractions for youth in the island.
