Kadapa: Tension prevailed at the Collectorate as the members of Kadapa Goldsmiths Association under the banner of CPI staged a dharna here on Wednesday, demanding action against Nandigama police for indiscriminately manhandling the goldsmith Khaliluddin of Rayachoti town.

Speaking on the occasion, CPI district secretary Eswaraiah said Nandigama police came to the Rayachoti town on October 12 without any evidence and took Khaliluddin into their custody on the allegations of purchasing silver from an old offender.

They took the victim to the Nandigama police station on the same day, the CPI leader said and alleged that Khaliluddin was interrogated with third degree methods. The CPI leader said victim suffered multiple fractures and police shifted him to Vijayawada for treatment.

Later, he was handed over to his family members. He said Khaliluddin is not able to perform any work due to serious injuries and it will take one year for him to resume the duties. The CPI leader demanded the government to pay Rs 20 lakh compensation to the victim. Later, the protesters submitted a memorandum to the Collector.
