Visakhapatnam: A two-day workshop on National Tribal Welfare Development was conducted in the city on Wednesday in which officials of the Tribal Welfare Department from various states took part.

Speaking on the occasion, Joint Secretary in the Union Tribal Welfare Affairs Ministry Rajesh Agarwal said that the Union government was keen to ensure that all the welfare schemes must reach the tribals without any delay. Forest Rights Act and revenue generation issues were the priority issues in tribal development, the official added.

In his speech, Commissioner, AP Tribal Welfare Gandham Chandrudu urged the Joint Secretary to provide minimum supportive price to the forest produce. If, MSP was provided to the farmers of the tribal community, they would get more revenues, he added.

He explained about the education, medical and various other activities being implemented for the tribals in the State. Though the GCC has selling several health drinks made out of forest produce, due to the Goods and Services Tax, losses have been incurred he lamented and requested to exempt those health drinks from paying the GST.

Secretary, Ministry of Tribal Welfare, New Delhi Leena Nair, Vice-chairman and Managing Director of Girijan Cooperative Corporation (GCC) Ravi Prakash and senior officials of tribal welfare departments of various states discussed various issues in the workshop. The workshop will be concluded on Thursday.
