Visakhapatnam: A delegation of all Left parties submitted a memorandum to In-Charge Collector G Srijana here on Wednesday demanding withdrawal of false cases foisted against the women activists who were staging a peaceful dharna demanding cancellation of beauty pageant.

Talking to the reporters after submitting the petition, State Committee member of CPM Ch Narsinga Rao said the government has been planning to handover beach fronts and public parks to the corporate agencies to organise beauty contests, build pubs and other programmes that degrade the status of women.

The government has also availed a loan of Rs 3,5000 crore for this purpose, he said. In order to prevent protests, the government is suppressing the activists in a most brutal manner.

The police filed cases under section 143, 188, 341, 353 read with 341 and another case under section 107 of the IPC against 12 leaders of various women organisations to make them bind over to the sub-divisional magistrate court (RDO).

“These cases are most inhuman and uncivilised and violation of fundamental rights,’’ Narsinga Rao said. District Committee secretary of CPI AJ Stalin said the police during the two dharna behaved indecently against the women activists.
