Ensure MSP for cotton, officials told
Minister for civil supplies Prathipati Pulla Rao asked the officials to buy the cotton produced by the district farmers at the minimum support price announced by the government. He was reviewing the current market situation of cotton and the proposed cotton purchasing centres in the district with Samuel Anand Kumar, Commissioner, state marketing department, Kona Sasidhar,district collector.

He was reviewing the current market situation of cotton and the proposed cotton purchasing centres in the district with Samuel Anand Kumar, Commissioner, state marketing department, Kona Sasidhar,district collector.
The minister said that cotton was cultivated in 1.82 lakh hectares this year and yield will be around 4.66 lakh tonnes. The government has announced Rs 4,320 as the minimum support price. Cotton Corporation of India will purchase the produce at 11 centres in the district, the minister said. The state government has developed a software which will help to decide how much crop to be purchased based on the total cultivated area of a farmer, he added.
The government will have an idea about how much an acre of land yields, and depending on that result, the purchase will be made after obtaining the farmer’s pattadar passbook and aadhaar card, the minister elaborated.
The amount for the purchase would be transferred to the cultivator’s account and all the departments concerned should strive to conduct efficient purchase process the minister suggested. Samuel Anand Kumar, commissioner, state marketing department, said that there are 43 cotton purchase centres across the state,and Guntur district was allotted 11 of them.
In each purchase centre, there should be one representative of the Cotton Corporation of India. He added that CC cameras were installed in each of the purchasing centres and instructed the officials of the marketing department to campaign about these centres in a big way and to involve all the people’s representatives in the entire process.
Guntur zilla parishad chairperson Shaik Janimun, joint collector-2 M Nageswara Rao, Guntur market committee chairman M Subba Rao and others took part in the review meeting.
