Visakhapatnam: GITAM University will honour two eminent personalities during its 8th convocation which will be held on November 7. Furthermore, GITAM University Vice-Chancellor MS Prasada Rao announced the honorary doctorates here on Saturday.

The Secretary of Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, Prof Ashutosh Sharma, will deliver the convocation address and will be conferred with the honorary degree of Doctor of Science. Ashutosh pioneered his research work spanning a wide range of areas like nano-technology, nano-composites and MEMS/NEMS in energy, health and environment, which brought him special recognition in the country and abroad. He had published over 300 peer reviewed papers, filed over 10 patents, presented over 100 invited or key note conference presentations and mentored a nanotechnology start up.

The university is also honouring eminent oncologist of international repute presently Tata Memorial Hospital Director Dr Rajendra Achyut Badwe with honorary degree of Doctor of Science. Badwe is associated with the government and also with several professional bodies of medicine and oncology. His contributions in the areas such as breast cancer, circulating tumor cells, DNA in solid tumours, clinical research methodology, and epidemiological research in oncology have enabled a better understanding of the cancer biology and in the development of life-saving treatment patterns.

Noted Telugu film actor, theatre artiste, dramatist, playwright and dialogue writer Gollapudi Maruti Rao will receive honorary Doctor of Letters degree. Gollapudi Maruthi Rao was the presenter of the most successful programme of HMTV ‘Vandella Kathaku Vandanalu’. He presented the programme for one year in HMTV.

A writer of extraordinary talent and astounding intellect, Gollapudi authored over nine plays, 18 playlets, 12 novels, four story volumes, two essays and the children's stories. Most of his writings convey an inherent message and true reflection of the society of the times. He wrote scripts and dialogues for 87 films, besides acting in as many as 280 films. He is known for scripting landmark films like Doctor Chakravarthy, Tharangini, Samsaram Chadharangam and Kallu.
