Officials attitude towards Dalits needs to change

Vijayawada: National SC Commissionmember K Ramulu on Saturday said that the officials implementing schemes intended for Dalits benefit should change their attitude towards them.
Addressing media here on Saturday, Ramulu said the Commission received several complaints that assigned lands given to Dalits under the Indira Gandhi’s Garibi Hatao programme were being seized in the state. Ramulu said he had asked the Collectors and SPs concerned to intervene and do justice to the financially backward Dalits.
Stating that as many as 118 cases of SC/ST atrocities were registered in Vijayawada, he objected to giving station bail to accused. In such cases, the accused had been freely moving in front of the victims, he said and added under the SC/ST Atrocities Act, compensation of Rs 8 lakh should be offered to the victims. While 25 per cent of amount should be given immediately after filing the case, 50 per cent after filing charge-sheet and the remaining 25 per cent after the verdict given in the case, he added.
