The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has embarked on developing greenery in parks and beautification of road margins. Four parks in the city will be developed with allocation of Rs 4 crore.

Vijayawada: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has embarked on developing greenery in parks and beautification of road margins. Four parks in the city will be developed with allocation of Rs 4 crore.

The parks will provide room for people who opt cinema as the big entertainment, source in the city. According to sources, Keep Well Park in Bhavanipuram, Urmila Subba Rao Nagar Park near Kabela, Nelson Mandela Park in LIC Colony and APIIC Park in Guru Nanak Nagar secured Rs 1 crore allocation each.

The funding was made under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut) scheme. While the Centre bears 50 per cent, the State offers 20 per cent leaving VMC to spend 30 per cent during the financial year 2017-18. The works may be completed by 2020.

As part of the development, the parks will be equipped with pathways, play items for children, cement benches, greenery and fountain if necessary apart from compound walls, according to an official.

The VMC has already been giving final touches to Avatar Park (opposite to Police Control Room) to make it lush green park. Ten more existing parks have been taken up for beautification.

They were picked up randomly and the corporation had earmarked Rs 40 lakh for their uplift during the current financial year. A sum of Rs 15 lakh was spent on them so far. VMC Horticulture department has started green belt on one side of Sitara-Gollapudi Road. The work is in progress as the funding for this work was allocated during 2016-17.

The greenery beside road will give a serene experience after completion of works. Apart from parks, canal bunds and road dividers will get ornamental plants with an allocation of Rs 1 crore. All the works have been taken up simultaneously. On completion, officials expect, these works will boost the number of visitors to parks.
