Amaravati: The war of freebies appears to be imminent in 2019 general elections, if one goes by the tone and the tenor of Leader of Opposition YS Jaganmohan Reddy, who completed Day-2 of his Padayatra in Kadapa district on Tuesday.

Deviating from his own promises mentioned in his party’s “Nava Ratnas” containing nine major election planks, Jaganmohan Reddy said he will even consider increasing the old-age pension up to Rs 3,000 per month.

In the Navaratnas, it was promised to double the old-age pension from Rs 1,000 being offered by the TDP government currently in line with its election promise.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu during the last election campaign promised to increase the pension from Rs 200 to Rs 1,000, taking the outgo up to Rs 5,000 cr in the State annual budget.

It was a storm in the TDP’s bastion when Jaganmohan Reddy entered Vempalli, the ruling party’s stronghold, on the second day of his Padayatra. He cut short his journey time so as to lay more focus on public interactions in Vempalli mandal, the native village of his family’s bête noir and Legislative Council former Deputy Chairman S V Satish Reddy of the TDP.

Although Vempalli falls under Jagan’s Pulivendula Assembly constituency, the area continued to be TDP’s stronghold for a long time. Taking a leaf from his father YS Rajasekhara Reddy’s book, Jagan adopted the concept of “Rachcha Banda” type of interactions popularised by YSR. He involved women from the SC Colony at Vempalli during the interactions.

He received feedback from them over power supply, distribution, house sites, SC corporation loans and fee reimbursement to students. He kept reassuring people, saying, “Don’t worry, good days are ahead as it is quite likely that YSRCP will be voted to power in the coming elections.”

Jagan inspected the pace of works relating to Galeru Nagari Srujala Sravanthi scheme and cotton fields en route his Padayatra. Later, he came down heavily on the government for the poor progress of irrigation projects, citing the case of GNSS.
