Amaravati: In the coming two years, government will spend about Rs 35,000 crore for construction of houses in urban areas for the poor, informed Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

He further added that the government will construct quality houses, during a review meeting on urban housing scheme at the Secretariat in Amaravati on Wednesday. The officials informed that they have invited tenders for construction of 2.96 lakh houses, out of the total sanctioned 3.67 lakh houses.

The tender process was under progress for the construction of remaining 72,000 houses, officials added. Out of the completed tenders, construction of more than 1.04 lakh houses commenced till date, explained the officials to the Chief Minister.

More than 9,000 construction workers and 1,179 engineers were engaged in these works. In all, 11,001 tonnes of steel and 16,799 tonnes of cement is required to complete construction of these houses, officials pointed out.

Chandrababu Naidu directed the officials to allow the beneficiaries to visit their houses, which were under construction. He said that everybody wants to know how the works were going on at their houses, hence government should provide an opportunity to them to visit the houses.

He suggested to officials to create awareness among the public through self-help groups in the urban areas. To make these new urban conglomerations sustainable, the government should ensure creation of necessary infrastructure, he added.
