Anantapur: In a bid to educate the people on following traffic rules and regulations, the police are not only imposing fines on the traffic violators but are compelling them to watch a 20-minute film composed by District Superintendent of Police (SP) GVG Ashok Kumar on road mishaps caused by traffic violations.

The film was composed using clippings from CCTV cameras on highways as well as in the city. An awareness cell was also established in the office of the SP for the purpose. The film projects different road mishaps caused by drunken drivers, those not wearing helmets and not fastening seat belts. It also describes the accidents which occurred due to traffic violations.

The film inspires viewers against negligent driving. The film is also being exhibited in schools and colleges where the police officials are addressing students as part of their awareness campaign. The awareness cell was launched more than a month ago by the SP. More than 7,000 residents already viewed the film which instilled fear in them of what would happen to their families if they died in road mishaps.

About 5,000 students and 200 auto drivers also viewed the film. The police produced about 700 pillion riders who rode their bikes in an inebriated condition and sent about 60 to jail in a bid to contain drunken driving.

The court also asked about 52 traffic offenders to help the police in traffic duties as part of the punishment for drunken driving and violating traffic. The innovative awareness campaign of the police has become a talk of the city and many have welcomed the SP’s initiative.

The police are imposing Rs 500 as fine for driving vehicle sans license, Rs 1,000 fine for sparing their bike to license less drivers, Rs 1,000 for cell phone driving, Rs 1,000 for not possessing pollution certificate and also for wrong parking.

Persons driving a vehicle not having vehicle registration is imposed a fine of Rs 5,000, Rs 1,000 for not having insurance certificate, speed driving Rs 400, Rs 200 for taxi driver for not wearing uniform, Rs 200 for overloading, Rs 200 for not wearing helmet, not fastening seat belt and also for pillion riders riding with three persons.
