Atmakur: A doctor at Atmkur primary health centre (PHC), Ratnakumari, on Wednesday allegedly slapped a patient, Anusha, who came for family planning operation after a recent delivery, and resorted to abuse after leaving the patient’s abdomen open for 20 minutes while performing the
procedure.

The doctor’s contention was that the woman had forced her to work, while letting loose a spate of abuses. This angered Anusha’s family, including her mother, who confronted the doctor and staged a protest.

Ratnakumari, who was asked by PHC drawing officer Dr Vinod Kumar to perform the operation, had reportedly behaved in a rude manner towards some patients earlier too. Because of her treatment two women had reportedly suffered abortion.

She allegedly advised Anusha to get the surgery done in Kurnool, which was turned down by Dr. Kumar. This angered the doctor who left a cut on the patient’s belly using a surgical blade, before leaving the centre.

Ratnakumari returned after 20 minutes and allegedly slapped Anusha. The patient got scared and narrated the incident to her mother and brother Srikanth, while breaking down.

Dr Vinod Kumar expressed regret over the incident. However, Ratnakumari denied slapping Anusha. She claimed that the patient was instigated to fabricate the story by the drawing officer who was not in good terms with the PHC doctors.
