Nellore: Loksatta and Foundation for Democratic Reforms founder Dr Jayaprakash Narayan criticised the state government for allowing corporate hospitals to loot money through NTR Vaidya Seva services.

He visited Government General Hospital here on Wednesday, as part of his ‘Janam Kosam JP’ campaign. Jayaprakash Narayan has inspected out-patient and in-patient blocks in the hospital and enquired with the patients about services being offered by the hospital staff. He interacted with doctors, health staff and paramedical staff in the medical college and also with college students in the hospital.

Addressing a programme on the premises of the hospital, Jayaprakash said that India is the only country which has been allocating 1.2 per cent of funds for health and medical sector whereas it has been 4 to 8 per cent across the globe. About 12 lakh children in the country below 5 years are dying every year due to food starvation, failing to get proper medical care and also unable to bear the costlier medical services from the corporate sector hospitals, he added.

He also said that it requires Rs 1,500 crore funds to the sector for providing quality medical services to the poor. He also opined that central and state governments have to improve the working conditions at Primary Health Centres. He also demanded the government to provide proper salaries to doctors and health staff.

Loksatta founder said that no doctor would come forward hereafter to work bearing the pressure from the work and government as they were getting less salaries. Doctors in government hospitals have been attending 120 out-patients and 10 surgeries in a day bearing the pressure, he added.

There is a need to introduce new policy for medical and health services to the poor and the middle class, he said. State government has been neglecting the public health allocating negligible funds for medical and health sector, he criticised. Local Loksatta leaders were also present.
