Kakinada: Zilla Parishad Chairman Jyothula Naveen Kumar said that paddy purchasing centres (PPCs) were being opened in the district to provide minimum support price (MSP) to farmers and to protect them from the exploitation of middlemen. Inaugurating a paddy purchasing centre at Z Ragampeta village in Gandepalli mandal here on Friday, Jyothula Naveen said moisture measuring meters were supplied at field-level.

The PPC staff would visit the fields on receiving calls by farmers, he said and added the farmers would be given moisture content certificates for their harvest based on moisture content. He requested the millers in the district to safeguard the interests of farmers by paying MSP for the purchases made.

Joint Collector A Mallikarjuna said 280 paddy purchasing centres were being set up in the district and 220 moisture measuring meters were supplied for the benefit of farmers. He requested the farmers to make use of paddy purchasing centres.

DM Civil Supplies K Krishna Rao said 12.26 lakh tonnes of paddy were expected to be produced during this kharif in the district and measures were taken to purchase 11 lakh tonnes of paddy through the PPCs. He added the farmers would be paid money within three days of purchasing paddy from these centres.

Peddapuram RDO Visveswara Rao, Jaggampeta Agricultural Market Committee Chairman SVS Appala Raju and AP Housing Board Director Kondaiah Dora participated.
