Eluru: Police have taken into custody Veeramachaneni Dhanunjaya Rao, former Sarpanch of Denduluru village on Saturday, for conducting a meeting at YMHA hall here against the Denduluru MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar.

The police have stated that the former sarpanch conducted the meeting even the Section 30 of Police Act and Section 144 of CrPC are in force in the city. The former Sarpanch was earlier worked in Peoples War Group in the 1990s. Leaders from several parties and peoples organisations attended the meeting. It was decided to form a united front to fight against the atrocities and highhandedness of the MLA. As a convener, Veeramachaneni Dhanunjaya Rao organised the meeting at YMHA Hall.

VV Krishna Rao, National President of Samata Party, APCLC President Vedangi Chittibabu, Patriotic Democratic Movement President D Siva Prasad, New Democracy district leader U Venkateswara Rao, IFTU district Joint Secretary Badda Venkatrao, INTUC leader Puli Sriramulu, Mendem Santosh Kumar president of Dalit Rights Protection Committee (DRPC), John Raju, Kula Nirmulana Porata Samiti (KNPS) attended the meeting.

When the meeting was started, the police reached YMHA hall on the complaint of MLA Chintamaneni Prabhakar and stopped the meeting by stating that there was no permission to the meeting. They took Dhananjaya Rao into their custody and shifted him to the One-Town police station. Around 500 people who attended the meeting objected the police action. Even after the custody of the convenor, the leaders of other parties continued the meeting. The leaders alleged that the government is using oppressive methods on the freedom of expression.
