Vijayawada: G Konduru police arrested two persons for killing stray dogs and selling the dog meat to earn money. The shocking incident of killing dogs occurred at Koduru village under G Konduru mandal limits of Krishna district. Police registered a case on Saturday and launched a probe into the incident.

According to G Konduru police, two persons Katta Adinarayana and Segu Lakshmana Rao were nabbed by Koduru villagers on Friday when they noticed the duo had killed two dogs for sale of dog meat. Later, the angry villagers handed over the accused to the police. Adinarayana and Lakshmana Rao are butchers by tradition. Recently, they got an idea of killing a dog and selling the dog meat to some individual customers or hotels on the pretext of deer meat or sheep mutton.

For the last two months, the duo had killed nearly 20 dogs and sold the meat. The buyers had blindly trusted them and purchased the dog meat for consumption.

The local villagers suspected foul play and kept tabs on them for the past several weeks. Finally, the villagers caught the duo red-handed on Friday when the accused had killed two dogs to sell the meat. Later, the villagers handed over the accused to the police, who registered the case under the section 420 for cheating customers and selling dog meat on the pretext of deer meat or sheep mutton.

They killed nearly 20 dogs in the two last months because some customers had liked the dog meat believing that it was deer meat and again asked for the same. The accused sold each kg dog meat at Rs 400. On an average, they earned nearly Rs 3,000 on each dog. The police said they registered the case under the Animal Act also.

Killing dogs is a crime and they may get punishment under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. G Konduru police are also collecting details of buyers who purchased dog meat from Adinarayana and Lakshmana Rao. Village administrative officer Basava Lingeswara Rao had lodged a complaint with the police about the killing of stray dogs by the two accused.

G Konduru sub-inspector of police G Rajesh said the two accused may get imprisonment of not less than seven years for torturing and killing the dogs. He said cases were booked under the section of 428 and 420.
