Vijayawada: Two brave fishermen present at the Pavitra Sangamam in River Krishna on Sunday evening saved lives of 16 victims, who might have been drowned in swirling waters of the river.

The two fishermen, Nadakuditi Pitchaiah, 45, and Kanna Siva Durga Rao, 38, of Ferri village in Ibrahimpatnam mandal plunged into waters and hauled 16 tourists to safety.

They went to Pavitra Sangamam as part of their daily work in the evening and saw the accident victims screaming with fear. Within no time, both Siva and Pitchaiah rushed to the spot in their boats.

Pitchaiah saved 12 people and Durga Rao rescued four people and helped them to reach the shore safely. Later, the rescued tourists were shifted to various hospitals. V Nagaraju, president of the Chandranna Fishermen’s Association, said the timely presence of fishermen saved 16 lives.

He said the fishermen naturally swing into action to save lives of accident victims and trace the missing persons in the water. As soon as the news broke out about the ghastly accident, hundreds of local fishermen with their families rushed to the spot on Sunday.
