Vijayawada: Death toll in the boat mishap near Pavitra Sangamam on Sunday evening rose from 16 to 21 on Monday.

The rescue teams which were searching for the missing boat passengers recovered four more bodies on Monday. As many as 16 bodies were recovered from the Krishna river till Sunday late night. The search continued from Sunday evening to till 2.30 am on Monday with the help of flood lights. The NDRF, Andhra Pradesh Fire Services teams and expert swimmers resumed search in the early hours on Monday and continued till evening with hope of tracing missing persons. They carried out intense search operations with inflated mechanised rubber boats.

Tourism Minister Akhila Priya personally monitored the search operations since morning near Pavitra Sangamam. According to information, 21 tourists died in the accident, 20 were saved by local fishermen and rescue teams. Another four are missing. Among them two or three may belong to boat operators. On Monday morning, bodies of two women were traced near the accident area. The body of a boy was found near Bhavani island and a body of a middle-aged man was found near Prakasam Barrage at about 1 pm.

A woman Kankatala Bhulakshmi (45), died while undergoing treatment in Andhra Hospital on Monday evening.

The death toll reached 21 with the demise of the woman who belonged to Ongole. Two women Sri Lakshmi and Usha Rani were discharged from the same hospital on Monday evening.
