Death toll in the boat mishap at Pavitra Sangamam in Ibrahimpatnam mandal of Krishna district on Sunday evening has risen to 22 with the recovering of the body of Asvika, a seven year old girl, from Nellore district. The child along with her mother P Harita (28) and grandmother Lalitha died in the ghastly mishap.

Vijayawada: Death toll in the boat mishap at Pavitra Sangamam in Ibrahimpatnam mandal of Krishna district on Sunday evening has risen to 22 with the recovering of the body of Asvika, a seven year old girl, from Nellore district. The child along with her mother P Harita (28) and grandmother Lalitha died in the ghastly mishap.

Asvika belonged to Ojili mandal of Nellore district. The body was sent to Nellore district after post-mortem. Girl’s father P Prabhu Kiran is working at NRI College in Agiripalli of Krishna district. His family members live at his native place in Ojili mandal of Nellore district. They came to Pavitra Sangamam on the auspicious occasion of Karthika Maasam and lost their lives in the boat accident.

In all, 21 bodies were recovered from Krishna river since Sunday evening. Another accident victim died while undergoing treatment in Andhra Hospital on Monday evening. In all, 22 tourists from both Prakasam and Nellore districts died in the mishap which occurred due to the alleged negligence of boat driver Gedela Srinu.

About 20 tourists were rescued by fishermen and the teams belonging to the NDRF and Andhra Pradesh Fire Services Department. Another three persons are missing and they are suspected to be the boat crew. The body of the 7-year-old-girl was recovered on Monday midnight and immediately shifted to the Government General Hospital for postmortem and later sent to her home in Nellore district.

Search operations halted: Search operations were stopped on Tuesday by rescue teams. They began search at around 6 pm on Sunday evening and continued till 2.30 am on Monday. Again the resumed search on Monday morning and continued till Tuesday morning. Director General of Fire Services department K Satyanarayana told The Hans India that they have stopped search in the river because there were no further inquires about the missing persons.

Till Monday night some people waited near the Pavitra Sangamam with a hope of finding their beloved ones. But, since Tuesday morning no one came to inquire about the missing persons, said K Satyanarayana. Nearly 170 experts in rescue operations from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Andhra Pradesh Fire Services and Disaster Response Force, staff from Fisheries Department and local fishermen searched intensively in the river waters to find the missing persons.
