Srikakulam: Heavy rains lashed Tekkali revenue division area on Wednesday due to low pressure in the Bay of Bengal. The rains lashed Tekkali, Nandigama, Palasa, Mandasa, Sompeta, Kaviti, Kanchili and Itchapuram mandals causing heavy damage to paddy crop.

The agriculture officials suggested the farmers not to store water in the fields and appealed to them to remove bunds to clear the water. As per planning department report till Wednesday evening, 13 cm rainfall recorded in Kaviti mandal which is highest in the district.

The rain recorded in Itchapuram mandal 11 cm, Kanchili 7.7 cm, Mandasa 6.82 cm, Nandigam 5 cm, Palasa 4.5 cm and Tekkali 4 cm. Moderate rainfall recorded in rest of the mandals across the district.

“98 per cent of paddy crop reached to harvesting stage as climate was favourable in the beginning of kharif season this year,” said joint director for agriculture G Rama Rao. Due to moderate to heavy rains paddy crop fell on the fields in all mandals across the Tekkali division.
