Lapses galore in boat tragedy

Vijayawada: Boat operators have violated many rules in ferrying the boat in Krishna River on Sunday and killed 21 innocent people, who boarded the boat to see the Pavitra Harati in Krishna river near Pavitra Sangamam.
The boating organisers M/s River Boating and Adventures took permission to operate the boat from Berm park to Venkatayapalem of Guntur district. But, the villagers of Venkatayapalem have opposed the entry of ferry in their village.
Consequently, the boat operators decided to ferry the boat from Bhavani Island to Pavitra Sangamam. Unfortunately, the boat capsized on Sunday evening near Pavitra Sangamam due to overloading of passengers as well as careless steering of driver Gedela Srinu, who is one of the partners in the boating company.
Besides, the M/s River Boating and Adventures also not obtain any permission from the Water Resources Department for ferrying the boat in Krishna River. The greedy operators, who invested Rs.74 lakh to float the company has decided to make quick money and overloaded the boat with 41 passengers against the capacity of only 25.
They conducted very limited trial runs in Krishna River and operated the boat with unlicensed operator. All these factors have led to the demise of 21 innocent tourists. The Commissioner of police D Gowtam Sawang told the media persons on Wednesday that there were many lapses in boat operations and investigation would continue to get more details.
Nexus exposed
Two APTDC officials have invested in the M/s River Boating and Adventures. Kolli Sridhar, who is working as Assistant Manager Harita Resorts, Kakinada, has invested in the firm through his father-in-law vis, Karri Bhairava Swamy. Another APTDC employee Pulusu Veera Reddy also invested in the firm in the name of his son and got him appointed as an employee.
