Darsi: A man was cheated by unknown miscreants over phone call and received a cake of clay and embossed images of gods instead of a phone he was promised, after paying money as gift tax and delivery charges.

Panduri Sankar of Christian Colony in Darsi received a phone call around 10 days ago. The caller informed him that Sankar won a Samsung Galaxy J7 mobile phone in a draw of Airtel customers. When he mentioned about him not participating in any draw, the caller convinced him that the draw was done by the management of a reputed telecom firm, for the customers who were with them for more than 10 years. The caller said that the MRP of the phone was Rs 16,000 in the market and he should pay Rs 3,999 for the gift tax and delivery charges, to have the phone delivered to him.

Convinced by the caller, Sankar obliged to pay the amount and take the mobile phone. On Wednesday, the caller informed him that his parcel from Smart Galaxy, Delhi- 110086, was waiting at the post office and he could claim the phone by paying the amount of Rs 3,999 as cash on delivery charges. After returning home, Sankar found a cake of clay and three embossed portraits of gods in the box.

When Sankar tried to contact the numbers with which the caller contacted him, the caller asked him to send the video of the contents in box to them through WhatsApp. But all the numbers he used to contact the caller were switched off later. The police received a complaint from Sankar and are investigating the case.
