Vijayawada: Contract workers in the SPDCL staged a dharna here on Thursday, demanding that the government regularise their services immediately and keep up the assurance that was given to them at the time of elections.

Addressing a gathering, CITU district secretary Ch Srinivas reminded that the Telangana government had already regularised the services of the contract workers. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had failed to keep up his election promise. He demanded that the government pay a compensation of Rs10 lakh, if the contract worker dies on duty and warned that if the government did not respond immediately, they would intensify their agitation.

He said that they would start relay fast camps in all the district headquarters to mount pressure on the government to achieve their demands.

Earlier, the contract workers raised slogans against the government for failing to keep up its assurance. They demanded that the government regularise their services immediately and do justice.

Later, they launched a relay fast camp to register their protest. CITU leader Babu Rao and Prabhu Das were among those who participated in the meeting.
