Parvathipuram (Vizianagaram): Where there is a will, there is a way. Taking a cue from that adage, the people from the district are not only earning money from the plants, fruits and nuts but also from leaves.

Traders in the district are earning good money by purchasing banana leaves at Parvathipuram agency area. Banana is being cultivated in 40,000 hectares in the district. Wholesale traders are purchasing them in huge quantity and exporting them to Kolkata, Raipur, Bhubaneswar and Nagpur.

Though the hotels and tiffin centres use plates but banana leaves are more hygienic than plates. Hence, hotel and tiffin centres owners are preferring banana leaves. Therefore, the local traders had started supplying banana leaves to them.

Now, this became a good income source for the traders and even they are hiring some workers and putting them in this job. The banana leaves here are being sent to Kakinada, Rajamahendravaram, Vijayawada, Dilshukhnagar, LB Nagar, Kukatpally areas in Hyderabad.

P Ramu of Erravaram in East Godavari was eking out his livelihood at Parvathipuram as a leave cutter and daily he cuts around 15 bundles each 100 leaves and selling them to a trader at Rs 35 per bundle.

Ramu said: “I have been earning Rs 15,000 per month by cutting and selling banana leaves. There is a huge demand during festivals, marriages and other functions. Even Ayyappa devotees also use these leaves for their lunch and dinner.”
