Kakinada: It is the head office of the district’s Medical and Health Centers. As many as 128 primary health centres, 21 urban health centres and 22 community health centres work under it. The DMHO office is a four storied building and was constructed in the year 2006-07 with a cost of Rs 1.29 crore. This building has an elevator (lift) for the usage of staff and the public. But this lift has been dysfunctional since its inception and stands as a decorative piece for the building.

The DMHO’s chamber is on the first floor. The eldrely, pregnant women, staff, people suffering from heart problems, arthritis and knee problems are advised not to climb the stairs. They are facing problem with the lack of a lift in the building. A senior citizen Paramahamsa told ‘The Hans India’ that he was suffering from a knee problem and the chamber he wants to go to, was on the first floor.

Former District Collector Arun Kumar expressed anger when he too climbed the stairs to the conference hall which is on the third floor. The Andhra Pradesh Health, Medical Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation (APHMHIDC) executive engineer, Kesavarao, informed ‘The Hans India’ that this lift had worked for one year after its inauguration.

He said that a proposal was made for the repair of the lift with an estimated cost of Rs 2 lakh in 2015. However, works have not started so far. He further said that in all the 23 districts of undivided AP, the APHMHIDC constructed DMHO offices in 2007 and lifts were not working in all most all the offices.
