Mafia creating sand scarcity
The Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Association of India (CREDAI), Andhra Pradesh, alleged that the state government had failed to control the sand mafia in Srikakulam district. Some of the influential political leaders and the government officials were conniving to create artificial sand scarcity.

As a result, sand was not being supplied for taking up the construction activities in Visakhapatnam city. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, the Chairman of CREDAI, AP Chapter, K Subbaraju, said that for the past three years, the problem had been persisting in the city. Even though CREDAI repeatedly urged the state government to put an end to the menace, there was no response from it, he lamented.
He said that there were no sand reaches in Visakhapatnam and the sand was being brought from Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts. Although there were eight sand reaches in Srikakulam, the sand mafia was operating only one sand reach to create artificial scarcity, he bemoaned.
Subba Raju alleged that the sand mafia was selling six units of sand loads for Rs 25,000. Though the state government made an announcement that sand was for free of cost, why several enforcement agencies conducted raids on the sand transporting vehicles, Subbaraju wondered. In fact, no builder wants sand free of cost, he added.
He said that they are ready to pay the amount to the government. However, on the pretext of providing sand free of cost, the government was not monitoring properly at the field level. Now, the mafia was selling six units of load at Rs 25,000. However, the government does not get even a single rupee, he added.
Subbaraju alleged that the sand mafia leaders were framing their own rules and regulations. The President of CREDAI, AP Chapter President, Shiva Reddy, said that that there was a lot of confusion prevailing after the GST came into force.
General Secretary Ch Sudhakar Reddy urged the government to launch ‘Ease of doing business’ in the real estate also. He demanded that the government introduce simple and easy documentation online for any sort of approvals. CREDAI, Visakhapatnam Chapter President P Koteswara Rao also spoke.
