Massive dharna against unauthorised quarrying
Tension prevailed at the Tahsildar office here on Monday as residents of Somadevapalli, the farmers and people living in the adjacent villages staged dharna on a massive scale demanding immediate halt to the unauthorised quarrying of the Velupu Konda on the outskirts of the village.

Earlier, some days ago, the villagers submitted a memorandum to the Tahsildar demanding action against the illegal quarrying of the hill. But, no action was taken against those who indulged in the quarrying as they have ‘support of the influential people’, including the local MLA. With each passing day, air and noise pollution is on the rise forcing the villagers to resort to agitation.
The “quarry mafia” has the support of high and mighty and there is none has any concern towards the problems of people, the villagers lamented. The State government and pressure groups on ecological balance are not bothering to pay attention to the menace of unauthorised quarrying. If there is no let up in the situation, the farmers and villagers have decided to resist quarrying works putting their lives at the stake.
