Police took 221 activists into custody who tried to participate in Chalo Assembly programme in various parts of West Godavari district. In Eluru subdivision alone, 112 left party workers were arrested and registered cases against 13 activists and leaders in Eluru division and released them on bail later in the evening.

It may be recalled that the left parties and Pratyeka Hoda Sadhana Samithi jointly gave a call to take part in ‘Chalo Assembly’ to press the government for ‘Special Category Status’ to Andhra Pradesh. As part of this, the left party activists were getting ready to go to Chalo Assembly. However, from Sunday night, police have been taking several workers and leaders into custody as a precautionary measure.

The police deployed force to stop the lead ers and activists from Eluru. They have camped at CPI office in RR Peta, New Bus Station Complex, Old Bus stand, Powerpet Railway Stations and checked every passenger. The police also arrested CPI district secretary Dega Prabhakar, district leaders Nekkanti Subba Rao and Bandi Venkateswara Rao.

In Chintalapudi also, the police foiled the attempts of workers and leaders who tried to go to Amaravati to participate in Chalo Assembly and arrested them. Following the arrest of left party leaders, the CPI, CPM YSRCP workers staged a dharna in Chintalapudi. In Eluru, the party workers resorted to road blockade for over half-an-hour at Fire station centre. The workers also burnt the effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Eluru.
