Tirupati: The Progressive Psychologists Association (PPA)-India has urged the government to appoint one women psychologist in every girls’ hostel. Speaking to the media here on Tuesday, the Association’s national women’s wing president Dr Hypno Padma Kamalakar has said that during adolescence several physical, mental and biological changes take place in girls. At this stage, they need the supervision and counselling of elders.

As they were staying away from their parents in hostels, they could not understand the changes and feel severe pressure, which was often leading to suicides, she observed. To prevent this type of situation, it is necessary to give them counselling and guidance about the natural changes and their impact.

For this, every girls hostel should have a women psychologist and a female nurse. She recalled that, in the combined State of Andhra Pradesh, women psychologists were appointed at many hostels. After bifurcation, the process of appointments was stopped. Whenever an incident occurs, the committee appoints a panel and washes off their hands, she alleged. The government is not even implementing the reports of those
committees.

Association’s founder and national president Dr Hypno Kamalakar said that they will wait for some time and if there was no response from the government, they will announce their further plan of action like organising dharnas, rallies and relay fast etc.

to make the government look at their demands. On this occasion, woman psychologist Depuri Swarna Latha of Tirupati was appointed as organising secretary of the Association’s national women’s wing.
