Vijayawada: Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director General R P Thakur on Wednesday said the department is trying to reduce corruption to zero level and felt the corruption is a big hindrance for the development of the State.

Thakur assumed charge one-year ago on November 20, 2016 and since then he has been trying to check corruption in various government departments.

Addressing media on Wednesday to mark his completion of one year as the head of ACB, Thakur said the department has registered 146 trap cases this year and 47 disproportionate assets (DA) cases along with conducting 43 surprise checks and 59 regular inquiries.

He informed that 8 criminal misconduct cases were also filed against government servants for their failure to deliver the services. Referring to ACB cases, he said the department had registered 41 cases on government officers this year who accumulated massive assets disproportionate to their income.

He added the ACB is working in co-ordination with the Income Tax department and Enforcement Directorate to act against officials who have properties on benami names. He said the ACB has also decided to do research on the reasons for increasing corruption and would take measures to bring down corruption level to zero in the subsequent years.

Thakur said 32 accused were convicted in 2016 in trap cases and the figure has gone up to 36 till November 20, 2017. He said in total 68 accused were convicted in two years. Referring to ACB offices in the State, Thakur said all 13 districts in the State will have individual units soon. He said a decision was taken to set up individual units to get close to people, who can approach the ACB officials to prevent harassment of officials.

He said the construction of buildings in Eluru, Visakhapatnam and Tirupati were completed. The DG said the State government has sanctioned Rs 15.94 crore for establishments, he added.

Earlier, Thakur conducted a review meeting with the officials and discussed the action plan to bring down the corruption in the state and thanked the officials for extending co-operation. He said people should also come out to lodge complaints with ACB to reduce the corruption and check illegal activities of officials, who are harassing people for money.
