The farmers’ leaders and farmers from various places of the district took out a rally here and staged a protest in front of the Collectorate on Wednesday. Speaking at the protest, Vadde Hanuma Reddy, district general secretary of Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham, said that there are 4,39,000 acres being cultivated under zone 1 and 2 of Nagarjunasagar Project.
The district was reeling under drought conditions for the past three years, he pointed out. Water released for the irrigation and drinking needs of Prakasam district is being used by Guntur farmers. The farmers in Prakasam district are now facing severe shortage of water for the crops, hence, the government should release water immediately, he said.
Chunduru Rangarao, president of the all-party farmers associations, said that they are demanding the government take action for the release of 40 tmc feet of water for the authorised cultivation under the right canal of Nagarjunasagar project.
He also demanded that the officials establish a mechanism to see water released through the right canal reach the last field under the cultivation and see the water flow is continuous at 3300 cusecs at 85/3 mile stone where Prakasam district is starting.
Mareddy Subba Reddy, president of YSRCP farmers division, Chunchu Seshaiah, Virginia Tobacco Farmers Welfare Association president, TV Seshaiah, general secretary of Eucalyptus-Subabul Farmers Association, Duggineni Gopinath, general secretary of Prakasam district Ruthu Sngham, R Mohan, Paritala Koteswara Rao, assistant secretaries of Rythu Coolie Sangham, and others participated in the protest.
